Solar for farms and tubewells in Haryana: PM-KUSUM, pumps and your options

Diesel ka kharcha ya raat ki bijli ka intezaar? How solar can run tubewells and farm buildings in Haryana, and what PM-KUSUM offers farmers.

Solar for farms and tubewells in Haryana: PM-KUSUM, pumps and your options
Quick answer: a farm in Haryana can use solar in three main ways — a standalone solar pump in place of a diesel pump, solarising an existing grid-connected tubewell, or solar for the farmhouse, dairy or cold room. Government support for pumps comes under the central PM-KUSUM scheme, which HAREDA runs in Haryana; the farmer's share and pump sizes are announced in each application round. PM Surya Ghar subsidy is for homes, not for farm pumps.

Khet mein paani time par chahiye — but diesel is costly and farm feeders often give power only for fixed hours. Solar works in the daytime, exactly when the pump is needed. Here is how farmers can plan it.

Option 1: Standalone solar pump

A solar pump runs directly from panels through a pump controller — no battery is needed because it pumps whenever the sun is out.

  • Replaces a diesel pump — no fuel bill, very low running cost
  • Works where there is no farm connection
  • Pump size (HP) depends on the depth of the water and how much water your crop needs

Option 2: Solarise your existing grid tubewell

If your tubewell already has a grid connection, panels can be added to run it in the day. Under PM-KUSUM there is a separate part for solarising existing grid-connected agricultural pumps, where the scheme rules allow it.

Option 3: Solar for the farmhouse, dairy or cold room

Farm buildings with lights, fans, a chaff cutter, milking machine or chiller can run on an on-grid, hybrid or off-grid system — chosen by how good the line is at your farm. See on-grid vs hybrid vs off-grid for the difference.

What is PM-KUSUM?

PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) is the central government's solar scheme for farmers. It has three parts:

PartWhat it covers
Component ASmall solar power plants on barren or fallow land
Component BStandalone solar pumps, mainly to replace diesel pumps
Component CSolarising existing grid-connected agricultural pumps

In Haryana the scheme is implemented by HAREDA (Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency). Applications open in rounds on its official portal, and each round states the eligible pump sizes, the farmer's share and the documents needed. Always check the current round in the HAREDA announcement before paying anything.

How to plan a farm solar system

  1. Water need — crop, area and how many hours of pumping you need in peak season
  2. Water depth — the borewell depth decides the pump type and HP
  3. Connection status — no connection, a weak farm feeder, or a regular connection
  4. Space and safety — a shadow-free spot for the panels and a strong structure that handles wind and storms

How Zento Solar helps

We guide farmers on PM-KUSUM and solar projects, check the site, and suggest the right solution for the farm, dairy or farmhouse. For the farmhouse or home on the same land, PM Surya Ghar may apply too — see the PM Surya Ghar page.
