Quick answer: a net meter is a two-way meter installed by your DISCOM (DHBVN or UHBVN). It counts the units you take from the grid and the units your solar sends back. You pay only for the net units — and extra units are credited to your account. After installation, the net meter and DISCOM inspection usually take 2–4 weeks.
Solar ka asli fayda net metering se hi milta hai. Without it, extra power made in the afternoon would simply go waste. Here is how it works in Haryana.
DHBVN or UHBVN — which one is mine?
Haryana has two power distribution companies:
- UHBVN — Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (north Haryana)
- DHBVN — Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (south Haryana)
Your electricity bill shows the name — and your consumer number on that bill is what we use for the PM Surya Ghar application and the net meter.
How does a net meter work?
Your old meter counts only one direction. A net meter counts both:
- Import — units you take from the grid (at night, or when your load is high)
- Export — units your panels send to the grid (sunny afternoons when the house uses less)
Your bill is made on import − export.
| Month example | Units |
|---|---|
| Units taken from grid (import) | 300 |
| Units sent to grid (export) | 220 |
| Units you pay for | 80 |
If export is more than import in a month, the extra units are carried forward as credit to the next bills, as per the Haryana regulator's (HERC) rules.
Step-by-step: getting a net meter
- Application — after installation, the net meter application is made (for PM Surya Ghar homes, through the portal) with the plant details.
- Fees and meter — the net meter fee is paid and the meter is arranged as per DISCOM norms.
- Installation — the DISCOM installs the net meter.
- Inspection — a DISCOM official inspects the plant: panels, inverter, earthing, safety switches.
- Commissioning — the plant is commissioned and your bills start on net metering. For subsidy homes, this is the step that unlocks the subsidy.
What can slow it down?
- Sanctioned load lower than the solar size — a load extension is needed first
- Name on the electricity connection is different from the owner (name change needed)
- Pending dues on the electricity account
- Missing earthing or safety equipment at inspection
Is the net meter cost included?
In Zento Solar's quotation, net meter cost and liaisoning are included. Some sites need extra work decided by the DISCOM at inspection (for example CT/PT changes on bigger connections) — that is charged at actuals, and we tell you upfront if your site may need it.
Net metering and your savings
With net metering, every unit your panels make is useful — used at home or credited. A 3 kW system makes about 405 units a month; at ₹7/unit that is about ₹2,835 every month. See the full maths in is solar expensive? the real calculation.
